Outdoorbrands Carbon Offset

Producing and transporting clothing for you to order in our online shop and have delivered to you in the Netherlands or Belgium requires energy. Generating energy produces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In and of itself, this isn't a problem, as CO2 is reabsorbed and used by plants which make life on earth possible. However, the atmospheric level of CO2 has risen year after year and the inconvenient truth is that this will result in climate change that will negatively impact nature, the environment and man itself.

Sustainable production

The manufacturers Outdoorbrands works with are committed to production methods that keep they environment in mind. This can mean that articles are produced with natural or recyclable fabrics and/or in a sustainable manner.

The latter means that there is a commitment to avoid using resources with a negative impact on the environment in any part of the production chain. There is a comparable commitment to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emission. This is informed by financial reasons on the one hand, but on the other by the idea that customers should be able to buy clothing that was produced responsibly. However, we did not want to stop there...

Carbon compensation

There's never a shortage of wind, and wind is a sustainable energy source. Sustainability in this case means it meets the needs of our generation without endangering the possibility of future generations to meet their needs.

Producing energy with a wind turbine does not produce CO2 or other greenhouse gasses, contrary to conventional power plants which produce power by burning fossil fuels like coal or gas.

The clothing you buy at Outdoorbrands has a carbon footprint of zero. This means that we have compensated for the CO2 emissions that the production and transport have caused. This we can guarantee because of our participation in the Noorderwind BV wind farm.  

Noorderwind BV wind farm

Noorderwind BV is a wind farm with 4 Vestas V80 2 MW wind turbines in line in the municipality of Dronten in Flevoland, the Netherlands. These turbines are approximately 260 feet high and produce about 16 million kWh annually. To put this in perspective, a one person household consumes about 2500 kWh and a family with 2 children about 4500 kWh annually.

Each high-tech wind tower consists of a nacelle with the turbine that generates the actual power. Each wind turbine is a small, independent power plant using an inexhaustible resource to generate power: i.e. wind.

Participation in the Noorderwind BV wind farm guarantees an annual CO2 compensation of over 35.000 kg tons. The usual Life Cycle Analysis of clothing assumes 3,5 kg of CO2 emissions for production and transport per 1 kilogram of synthetic clothing and 10 kg per each CO2 emissions per each kilogram of clothing made of non-biological cotton.

In short, our participation means that we can compensate the entire cradle-to-cradle CO2 emission for each article being sold through our online store.
